IUP ROUNDUP: Softball team sweeps Clarion
Tara Senn allowed one earned run in a complete-game win in the first game and posted another strong performance in the the second game as the IUP softball team cruised to a doubleheader sweep of Clarion in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action Sunday.
IUP won the first game 2-1 and cruised to an 11-3 win in the second game.
In the opener, Senn, a freshman, scattered five hits and struck out two in seven innings. She did not issue a walk and allowed the only run on a solo home run in the sixth inning.
Stef Poates got things started in the first inning when she singled to drive in Christy Mauk. Mauk added an RBI in the second when her sacrifice fly scored Mary Ward. Mauk was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored, and Poates, Ward and Jasa Mitchell had the other IUP hits.
In the second game, IUP scored five runs in the first inning and cruised from there in a game that was shortened to six innings.
The Crimson Hawks batted around in the first inning and strung together five consecutive hits. Strack, Ward and Allison Viguers had RBIs, and Jen Beaver capped the inning with a single that plated two more runs.
Allison Viguers went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored, and Beaver went 2-for-2 with a walk and three RBIs. Ashley Strack went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Kaylee Prendergast went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Senn surrendered two earned runs on four hits in four innings. Stephanie McCoy tossed two innings in relief and allowed one run on three hits.
IUP (15-8, 5-3 PSAC Central) plays at Seton Hill on Tuesday.
Baseball team drops pair
Despite four home runs and eight extra-base hits, IUP dropped both ends of its home-opening doubleheader with Gannon on Sunday, 4-1 and 9-7.
Three of the four homers were solo shots, and Jordan Giannini added a two-run homer in the second game. Brett Quiggle, Dylan Tice and Ryan Uhl had the other home runs for IUP.
Robbie Zinsmeister finished the day 3-for-8 with a pair of doubles, and David McNeill went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Kyle Zaorski took the loss in the first game. He pitched a complete game, allowing nine hits and four earned runs. He struck out six.
Matt Szukics took the loss in the second game, allowing three hits and two earned runs in two innings.
IUP (14-13, 2-6 PSAC West) plays host to Mansfield on Wednesday.
