IUP ROUNDUP: Tennis team nets win

The IUP women’s tennis team earned its second conference win in its home opener, sweeping Clarion, 9-0, in a PSAC West Division match on Thursday. The win improves the Crimson Hawks’ record to 7-5 overall on the season.

All of the Crimson Hawks finished their opponents without needing a third set.

Tanya Timko didn’t drop a game, defeating her opponent 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 spot.

No. 6 Alanna McFail got back on the winning track after picking up a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Playing at No. 3, Sophie Butland outlasted her opponent to win the match, 6-3, 6-2. The win marked Butland’s eighth singles victory of the season.

Other Crimson Hawks that picked up wins Thursday were Erika Schaas, Ranvita Mahto and Rachel Wood.

IUP also finished its doubles matches in a half hour, dropping a total of four games. Mahto and Wood awarded the Crimson Hawks its first points of the day cruising to an 8-0 win. No. 1 Timko and Schnaas and No. 2 Butland and McFail both picked up 8-2 victories.

IUP travels to West Virginia State on Saturday.

BASEBALL: The Crimson Hawks (9-10, 3-3) dropped a pair of PSAC West Division games to Seton Hill on Thursday, falling to the Griffins 4-3 and 2-0 in a doubleheader played at Point Stadium in Johnstown.

In Game 1, Seton Hill scored two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to erase a three-run deficit and score a come-from-behind win. Chris Calliari went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead IUP. Kyle Zaorski struck out one, walked one and allowed eight hits in a complete game losing effort.

Seton Hill outhit the Crimson Hawks 5-4 in the second game and scored a run in each of the second and fourth innings to complete the sweep.

Rick Jones paced IUP by going 2-for-2. Zach DeTillio tossed a five-hitter in a losing effort.

DeTillio walked two and struck out none.

The teams play again today, in Greensburg.
