IUP ROUNDUP: Two swimmers set records

IUP’s Christina Janoksy and Allyson Mitidieri each turned in record-setting performances on the fourth and final day of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Swimming Championships in York on Saturday.

Janosky broke her own school record and finished seventh in the 1,650-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 17 minutes, 23.52 seconds. The mark also was an NCAA B cut time.

Mitidieri also broke her previous record, finishing the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:16.94. She finished third with an NCAA B cut mark.

Emily Shumaker took fifth in the 200 backstroke at 2:06.03, and Paige Spradling took sixth in the same event at 2:20.56.

IUP’s men’s and women’s teams combined for 28 NCAA B standards, one NCAA automatic qualifying time, 17 school records and five PSAC champions. The women finished second in the team standings, IUP’s highest finish since winning the conference championship in 1999. IUP totaled 490 points, and West Chester won with 893.

IUP will compete in the NCAA Division II Championships on March 12 to 15 in Geneva, Ohio.

 

TRACK AND FIELD: Four women’s runners hit conference qualifying marks and five men followed suit at the Kent State Tune-Up indoor meet Saturday.

Kristen Donaldson and Indiana graduate Lauren Lyons qualified in the 3,000-meter run. Donaldson came in at 10 minutes, 41.81 seconds, and Lyons followed at 10:43.16.

Steph Beaudette qualified in the 1,000 run at 5:12.56, and Samantha Thompson qualified in the 5,000 at 18:04.28. Caitlyn Hittie qualified in the 60 hurdles at 9.67.

In the men’s meet, Victor Costello and Andrew Morgan qualified in the 3,000. Costello came in at 4:17.25, and Morgan followed at 4:21.10.

Nick Patton qualified in the 3,000 at 8:43.72, and Matt Rutt followed at 8:54.30.

Michael Turner qualified in the shot put with a throw of 13.95 meters.

IUP competes in the PSAC Indoor Championships Saturday and Sunday at Lewisburg.

 

SOFTBALL: IUP split four games in the Shaw University Softball Challenge on Saturday and Sunday.

On Sunday, IUP suffered a 3-2 loss to Columbus (Ga.) State and bounced back with a 9-7 win over Fairmont (W.Va.) State.

Rachel Franis hit a home run, and Stef McCoy and Megan Gould each went 3-for-4 to lead IUP in the win. Meghan Carney and Jasa Mitchell each stroked two hits and combined for three RBIs.

Tara Senn picked up the win.

Alexa Campbell took the loss against Columbus State. Mitchell tripled and scored a run, and McCoy doubled in a run.

On the opening day, IUP lost to West Virginia Wesleyan 7-2 before rallying to defeat Chowan (N.C.) 12-9. IUP also held an 8-0 lead after two innings against Winston-Salem (N.C.) State before the game was suspended. It will not be made up.

Emily Hofman picked up the win against Chowan, and Alexa Campbell got the save. Mitchell homered, and Rachel Francis went 5-for-5. McCoy, Hannah Mercer and Gould each had multi-hit games.

Campbell took the loss in the opener, and Carney knocked in both runs.

IUP plays in the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament, which begins March 14.
