IUP tennis team tops WVSU

INSTITUTE, W.Va. — The IUP women’s tennis team came away with an impressive 6-3 win over West Virginia State on Saturday in a battle of top teams in the NCAA Division II’s Atlantic Region.

The Crimson Hawks, who were ranked No. 2 in the region, claimed the critical fifth point when No. 4 singles player Ranvita Mahto cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory.

In other matches, IUP’s top singles player, Tonya Timko, breezed to a 6-2, 6-2 win, as did No. 2 Sophie Butland. No. 6 Alanna McFail also won, 6-4, 6-3. The Crimson Hawks also got a point from their No. 3 doubles team of Rachel Wood and Mahto, which won 8-4, and its top pair of Timko and Erika Schnaas, which won 9-8 (8-6).
