SANDLOT BALL: Indiana holds on for win in tourney
Indiana jumped out to a 5-0 lead and then held on for a 5-4 win over Marion Center in the Little League District 7 9- and 10-year-old girls’ softball tournament Monday at the Indiana Little League complex.
Marion Center rallied for four runs in the sixth and final inning and had the bases loaded before Indiana’s Sarah Zimmerman got a strikeout on a 3-2 count to preserve the win.
Zimmerman finished with 17 strikeouts and picked up the win.
Hannah Householder stroked two singles and Hannah Wagner smacked a double for Indiana.
Indiana advanced to play KESS for the district championship on Wednesday. The game will be played on the field behind the East Kittanning Township fire hall.
Fast Times, IVP sweep games
Fast Times Screen Printing swept an Indiana Area Baseball Boosters doubleheader with Ponderosa on Sunday, scoring 7-6 and 10-1 victories.
Lucas Chakot was the winning pitcher in both games, striking out 11 in a complete-game win in the first game and fanning five in the second game.
Scott Shirley hit a game-ending single, scoring Steve Stitt, in the bottom of the seventh inning in the first game. Shirley and Chakot had two hits each, and Anthony Stipcak added a double.
Sean Ryan homered for Ponderosa.
Adam Mathe cracked three doubles to pace Fast Times in the second game. Chakot and Kevin Snyder added two hits apiece.
Shane Martin tallied two hits for Ponderosa.
• Italian Village Pizza knocked off Bob’s Pizza, 8-6, on Monday, and topped Anderson’s Heating and Air Conditioning, 8-1, on Sunday.
In Monday’s game, Tony Fiechuck hit a three-run home run and a single to finish with four RBIs for Italian Village. Andy Fiechuck, Mark Donahue, Steve Planski and Brett Shoup each chipped in two hits, and Kenny Karpik pitched a complete game.
For Bob’s, Kevin McKee went 3-for-4, and Charlie Walker had two hits, including a two-run triple.
On Sunday, Italian Village’s Ryan Held pitched a complete game, and Donahue hit a two-run home run for one of his two hits. Italian Village also took advantage of nine walks.
For Anderson’s, Jim Bartek had two hits, Steve Bartek knocked in the lone run, and DJ Mumau doubled.
• Kinkead Agregates beat Bob’s Pizza, 8-1, on Sunday. Steve Barbi pitched a complete game, Tony Nanni banged out three hits, and Bobby Hopkins chipped in two hits for the winners.
Gilgal cruises to softball win
Gilgal Presbyterian rolled over Sovereign Grace, 24-7, in an Indiana County Church League softball game Monday.
Bobb Patterson went 5-for-5 with five RBIs and finished a home run short of hitting for the cycle for Gilgal. Ben Harley also went 5-for-5 and drove in a run, and Aaron Black finished 4-for-5 with two RBIs. Scott Bowman, Dave Rupert, Jason Cribbs and Ken Campbell chipped in three hits apiece. Jeff Cribbs picked up the win and drove in two runs.
Greg Hartnett, Andrew Van Horn and Kevin DeVivo each had two hits for Sovereign Grace.
