SENIOR LEGION BASEBALL: Kovacik sweeps doubleheader

First-place Kovacik Insurance banged out 20 hits in Wednesday’s doubleheader and ran its record to 10-2 by sweeping host Punxsutawney, 10-4, and 7-3, in Indiana County Senior Legion baseball action.

The first game was a continuation of a game that was postponed due to rain on June 18.

Kovacik Insurance racked up 13 hits and plated seven runs in the top of the fifth inning to roll over Punxsutawney.

Bobby Gaston struck out five, walked five and allowed three hits in four innings to get the win. Gaston also went 3-for-3 with a double.

Scott Thompson singled three times for Kovacik Insurance. John Distefano doubled and drove in three runs, and Dylan Dirienzo singled and drove in two runs.

Ruben Taylor went 2-for-4 to lead Punxsutawney.

In Game 2, Kovacik Insurance surrendered 10 hits but scored in five of seven innings to finish the sweep.

Thompson went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Kovacik Insurance.

Winning pitcher Reed Ratkus struck out four, walked one and served up two runs in four innings.

Michael Klingensmith went 3-for-4 to lead Punxsutawney. Cory Geer went 2-for-4, and Clayton Dale singled and drove in two runs.

Both teams play today. Kovacik Insurance travels to Young Township and Punxsutawney (4-6) plays host to Homer City Legion.
