First-place Kovacik Insurance scored the only runs in a pitchers’ duel in the fourth inning and improved to 9-0 with a 2-0 win over Marion Center in an Indiana County Senior Legion baseball game Sunday at WyoTech Park.

Kovacik’s Bobby Gaston fired a two-hitter, striking out 15 and walking three.

Jared Selkirk tossed a five-hitter in a losing effort. He struck out four and walked five.

Scott Thompson put Kovacik Insurance on the board when he tripled to score Adam Magalich in the bottom of the fourth inning. Thompson then scored on Gaston’s groundout to make it 2-0.

The teams meet again Tuesday at Marion Center.

YOUNG TOWNSHIP 5, PUNXSUTAWNEY 4: Punxsutawney had no answer for the first four batters in the Young Township lineup, and the Renegades held on for a victory at Bertolino Field.

Tanner Baylor, Ben Carnahan, Mitchell Yard and Mitch Johnston combined for all 11 of Young Township’s hits, scored all five runs and drove in three. Yard, Carnahan and Johnston each had three hits, and Baylor accounted for the other two.

Ian Satler took care of matters on the mound, striking out 10, walking three and allowing five hits. He struck out the side in the seventh after Punxsutawney scored in the sixth to make it 5-4.

“He had great command all game long,” Young Township manager Barry Thomas said. “He kept them off balance all game and was able to do whatever he wanted on the mound. The kid pitched one heck of a game.”

Punxsutawney jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third when Dakota Byers smacked a bases-loaded triple.

Young Township responded in the bottom of the inning and tied the game on Yard’s run-scoring single and Johnston’s two-run single and took a 5-3 lead in the fourth.

Reuben Taylor added an RBI single in the sixth for Punxsutawney.

Young Township (5-5) plays host to Indiana Legion on Monday and visits Indiana Legion on Tuesday. Punxsutawney plays at Post 493 in Homer City on Tuesday.
