Undefeated over the course of its summer dual-meet season, the YMCA of Indiana County Piranhas swim team grabbed second place at the Western Pennsylvania YMCA Swimming League Summer Championships on Saturday at Shady Side Academy in Fox Chapel.

The Piranhas were led by Kara Gibbon, who grabbed three individual first place finishes in the 11- and 12-year-old girls’ 50-yard freestyle, 50 butterfly and 100 freestyle.

Gibbon also anchored the first-place 12-under 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay. She teamed with Kenzi Kessler, Kimber Randolph and Peyton Rayko in both relays, and the 200 freestyle quarter set a team record of 1 minute, 49:46 seconds.

Yana Naronha (6-under girls’ 25 freestyle and 25 backstroke) and Preston Kessler (6-under boys’ 25 freestyle and 25 backstroke) each took a pair of first-place finishes.

Alex Bauer (8-under boys’ 25 backstroke, 100 individual medley and 25 freestyle) added second- and third-place medals to his first-place medal.

Other first-place finishers were Kenzi Kessler (11-12 girls’ 50 breaststroke), Kimber Randolph (11-12 girls’ 50 backstroke), Olivia Kuzneski (9-10 girls’ 50 freestyle), Liam Randolph (8-under boys’ 25 butterfly) and Grant Hess (15-over boys’ 200 individual medley.

Indiana finished second to regional powerhouse Laurel Highlands Regional YMCA.

Coach David King pointed out that one of the great strengths of his team is its depth and consistency across the roster.

In addition to the medalists, numerous swimmers finished in the top eight places in their events or were members of relays, adding points to the overall team score.

While the summer season has ended, a contingent of Piranhas swimmers will travel to the Hershey-Harrisburg area at the end of the month to compete in the State Games of America/Keystone Games against top swimmers from across the U.S.
