YOUTH LEGION BASEBALL ROUNDUP: KOVACIK INSURANCE 10, CLYMER LEGION 0

on June 25, 2013 10:30 AM

Kovacik Insurance banged out 10 hits and provided more than enough run support to pitchers Ryan Shirley and Omar Ward to coast to a win over host Clymer Legion.

The game was shortened to six innings due to the mercy rule.

Shirley and Ward combined to throw a one-hitter, holding Clymer Legion hitless through the first five innings.

Shirley struck out two, walked four and allowed no hits in four innings to earn the win. Ward struck out three and allowed one hit in two innings of relief.

“They both pitched well,” Clymer Legion manager Bill Eckenrode said. “We put the ball in play a lot, but they also played great defense. Everything we hit they seemed to track down.”

John Fetchko went 3-for-4 with a double to lead Kovacik Insurance. Josh Daugherty doubled and drove in two runs, and Doug Pollack collected three hits, all singles.

Mike Hildebrand notched Clymer Legion’s lone hit, a single in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Both teams play Wednesday. Clymer Legion (11-5) travels to I-Medical, and Kovacik Insurance (11-2) plays host to Walbeck Insurance.

DERRY 10, MARION CENTER 5: Derry rallied twice from one-run deficits and pulled away in the late innings to earn a win over Marion Center.

Derry trailed 5-4 after Marion Center scored three runs in the top of the fifth, but the hosts responded with a three-run fifth inning to take a 7-5 lead and added three runs in the sixth to round out the scoring.

Devin Siko, Zack Blystone and Damian Huffman had two hits apiece to pace Derry. Huffman had a triple, and Blystone hit a double.

Alex Rebtoy earned the complete-game win, striking out six and walking four.

Jared Marshall led Marion Center’s offense with two hits. Eric Hicks took the loss.

Marion Center scored twice in the third to take a 2-1 lead, but Derry briefly regained the lead with three runs in the bottom of the inning for a 4-2 lead.

The visitors took their second lead of the game, 5-4, with a three-run fifth before Derry scored six runs over the final two innings.

Both teams play Wednesday. Derry (6-12) plays host to Fezell Enterprises, and Marion Center (0-18) visits United NRG.
