PITTSBURGH — The Penguins signed free-agent forward Steve Downie to a one-year, $1 million deal Wednesday, a day after signing four players.

The 27-year-old Downie had four goals, 20 assists and 106 penalty minutes last season in 62 games for Colorado and Philadelphia. Downie has 59 goals, 103 assists and 766 penalty minutes in 336 regular-season games in seven seasons with Philadelphia, Tampa Bay and Colorado.

He scored a career-high 22 goals and 46 points in 2009-10 for the Lightning, playing under current Penguins assistant coach Rick Tocchet.

Known as a gritty winger, Downie has been suspended for dangerous hits multiple times in his career. He was fined in March of 2010 for a dangerous hit on Sidney Crosby.

On Tuesday, the Penguins signed defenseman Christian Ehrhoff, forward Blake Comeau and goalie Thomas Greiss, and re-signed forward Marcel Goc.
