Penguins notes — Pittsburgh is the No. 1 seed in the Metropolitan Division and No. 2 in the Eastern Conference. It entered the season still reeling from a four-games-to-none loss at the hands of Boston in the 2013 Eastern Conference finals. On the road back to the playoffs, the Penguins won the Metropolitan Division championship with ease, and Sidney Crosby claimed his second Art Ross Trophy as the league’s leading scorer. …

Pittsburgh had a league-high 527 man-games lost due to injury. The second-least fortunate team in that regard, Detroit, lost just 417. The status of Evgeni Malkin (foot) remains uncertain going into the playoffs. The center missed the last 11 games of the regular season. He has been skating on his own, and he joined the team’s optional morning skate on Sunday. Center Marcel Goc (lower body) is expected to miss three weeks. Forwards Chris Conner (hand), Pascal Dupuis (knee) and Joe Vitale (upper body) are all on injured reserve. …

Goaltender Tomas Vokoun has been recalled from his conditioning stint with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Vokoun missed the entire regular season after emergency surgery to dissolve a blood clot in September. … Crosby also led the league in assists. Fleury tied for second in wins. … Pittsburgh leads the league in power-play percentage and is fifth on the penalty kill. … The Penguins are in the playoffs for the seventh straight year. They also went each year from 1991 to 2001 and have appeared in 19 of the last 24 playoffs contested.

Blue Jackets notes — Columbus is the No. 1 wild-card team in the Eastern Conference, taking the No. 7 seed in the conference playoffs after a fourth-place finish in the Metropolitan Division. This is the Blue Jackets’ first season in the Eastern Conference, having been moved over in the league’s realignment last offseason. …

In the franchise’s 13th season, the Blue Jackets still seek their first playoff win. Columbus has qualified for the playoffs only once, losing four-games-to-none to Detroit in the 2009 Western Conference quarterfinals. … Columbus is the league’s youngest team, with an average of 26.1 (Pittsburgh is the fourth-oldest at 28.6). Center Boone Jenner and defenseman Ryan Murray are each 20 years old, leading scorer Ryan Johansen is 21, and the Blue Jackets’ roster has seven other players age 25 or under, many of whom are key contributors. One such player is 25-year-old goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, who won the Vezina Trophy as the league’s top goaltender last season after being jettisoned by Philadelphia. …

Murray (sore knee) is probable for Game 1. Nick Foligno (lower body) is questionable. Forward Nathan Horton (abdominal surgery) will miss at least six weeks, and R.J. Umberger (lower body) is out indefinitely.

Next — The winner advances to face the Philadelphia-New York Rangers winner in the Metropolitan Division finals.
