BOXING: Mayweather to fight Alvarez

LAS VEGAS — Floyd Mayweather will fight young Mexican star Canelo Alvarez on Sept. 14 at the MGM Grand.

The 36-year-old Mayweather is unbeaten in 44 fights.

Alvarez is 42-0-1.

The fight will be contested at 152 pounds and offers a rare bout between two unbeaten fighters in their primes.

Wrestling could still earn spot

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia — Three months after wrestling got kicked out of the 2020 Olympics, the ancient sport is back in the frame and will compete against baseball-softball and squash for a spot in the games.

The IOC executive board decided Wednesday to recommend wrestling, squash and baseball-softball to the full IOC assembly for a final decision on Sept. 8 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Only one will make it through.

Tortorella fired by Rangers

NEW YORK — The Rangers fired combative coach John Tortorella, four days after New York was eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Tortorella was unexpectedly dismissed with one year left on his contract.

He led the Rangers to the Eastern Conference finals last year and into the second round this year before New York was eliminated in five games by the Boston Bruins.

TE Gronkowski to have surgery

BOSTON — New England tight end Rob Gronkowski will have back surgery on a disk in mid-June.

A person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press on Wednesday that Gronkowski will undergo the surgery next month, which means he will miss the rest of offseason training activities with the Patriots.

• HOUSTON — Texans running back Arian Foster’s strained right calf will keep him off the practice field until training camp this summer.

Jeter cleared to throw

NEW YORK — Derek Jeter was back in uniform at Yankee Stadium — but only to play catch.

The injured shortstop was on the field during batting practice before the New York Yankees faced the Mets in the Subway Series.

Still recovering from offseason ankle surgery, Jeter said he had the protective walking boot removed from his left foot last Friday and was recently cleared to throw.

Belgium beats U.S. in friendly

CLEVELAND — Christian Benteke scored two goals in the second half and Marouane Fellaini had another, leading Belgium to a 4-2 thrashing of the United States in an international soccer friendly that the Americans hoped would get them ready for upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Geoff Cameron scored in the 22nd minute and Clint Dempsey pounded in a penalty kick in the 80th minute for the U.S.

• LONDON — England and Ireland played to a 1-1 tie in a scrappy, but peaceful exhibition game in their first matchup since hooliganism forced the abandonment of a game 18 years ago.
