SAN DIEGO — Barry Zito’s Strikeouts For Troops foundation is bringing 20 Marines who’ve been awarded the Purple Heart to spring training for three days.

The Marines will attend three games. They’ll have lunch with players, watch batting practice and be introduced on the field. Zito, a left-hander with the San Francisco Giants who went to high school in San Diego, will host a dinner Monday night for the Marines and several other big leaguers. Afterward, Zito, Giants third base coach Tim Flannery, Chicago White Sox pitcher Jake Peavy and singer Steve Poltz are scheduled to provide entertainment.

Among the Marines attending is Sgt. Nick Kimmel, a triple amputee who threw out the ceremonial first pitch before Game 2 of the World Series in San Francisco in October. He was accompanied to the mound by Hall of Famer Willie Mays and Zito.
