BOSTON (AP) — Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell waited until all of his players safely made it out of a simulated game before confirming what he’d only hinted at before: Left-hander Jon Lester will start Game 1 of the AL division series.

Lester was 15-8 with a 3.75 ERA this season, but he won his first six decisions and seven of his last nine. From May 20 through the All-Star break, he went 2-6 with a 6.27 ERA.

• ATLANTA (AP) — Slumping second baseman Dan Uggla was left off the Atlanta Braves’ roster for the NL division series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Braves announced their roster Wednesday. Outfielder B.J. Upton, who is hitting only .184, is on the roster.

Service academy teams will play

UNDATED (AP) — U.S. military academy football teams will play this weekend, despite the government shutdown.

A senior defense official said the decision affects this weekend’s games only, and future games will be evaluated as events unfold. The official was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly so spoke on condition of anonymity.

Navy later confirmed its home game against Air Force in Annapolis, Md., would be played as scheduled Saturday. The game is sold out and is the most notable one on the Midshipmen’s home schedule. The Army-Navy game at the end of the season is played at a neutral site.

The Navy-AFA game and Army’s game at Boston College were in jeopardy after the Defense Department temporarily suspended sports competition at the service academies as a result of the budget impasse in Congress.

• UNDATED (AP) — Alabama coach Nick Saban suspended star safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix indefinitely for violating unspecified team rules.

Saban announced the suspension of one of the top-ranked Crimson Tide’s top defensive players after Wednesday’s practice. Saban wouldn’t say what Clinton-Dix did wrong.
