MLB: Mariners coach has cancer
SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle Mariners third-base coach Jeff Datz said Saturday he has been diagnosed with cancer and might be away for part of the season.
Datz told Mariners’ players during a team meeting before Saturday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels and later released a written statement. Datz said he’s still in the process of making decisions on treatment and he might have to miss some games.
“The good news is that it was caught very early, and I have great support from my wife, my family, (manager) Eric (Wedge), the coaches and staff, all the players and the Mariners organization,” Datz wrote.
The type of cancer was not disclosed.
Caps sign goalie to extension
WASHINGTON (AP) — Making sure both of their homegrown goalies stick around, the Washington Capitals signed Michal Neuvirth to a $5 million, two-year contract extension Saturday.
Even though he’s been the team’s No. 2 goalie this season, Neuvirth will be paid more than usual starter Braden Holtby, who signed a $3.7 million, two-year deal in February.
Neuvirth will make $2.4 million next season and $2.6 million in 2014-15. He was picked in the second round of the 2006 NHL draft by Washington.
Neuvirth was 4-5-2 with a 2.74 goals-against average in 13 games this season.
Nadal reaches final in Barcelona
BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Seven-time winner Rafael Nadal beat Milos Raonic 6-4, 6-0 Saturday to reach the final of the Barcelona Open.
He will play for the title today against Nicolas Almagro in a match between Spaniards. Almargo defeated Philipp Kohl- schreiber 6-2, 6-1 in the other semifinal. This will be his second clay-court final of the year.
The start of Nadal’s match was delayed because of rain. He overcame an early break and dominated the rest of the way, with Raonic’s big serve doing little damage.
Nadal has won 38 straight matches on the Real Club de Tenis’s outdoor red clay.
• STUTTGART, Germany (AP) — Defending champion Maria Sharapova will face Li Na in the final of the Porsche Grand Prix today in a matchup of the last two French Open winners. Sharapova rallied in the third set to beat Angelique Kerber 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 before second-seeded Li followed with a 6-4, 6-3 win over qualifier Bethanie Mattek-Sands of the United States.
Rain washes out NHRA qualifying
BAYTOWN, Texas (AP) — Rain forced NHRA officials to cancel the majority qualifying Saturday for the NHRA SpringNationals at Royal Purple Raceway.
One round of Pro Stock Motorcycle qualifying was completed, and 12 Pro Stock cars made attempts before the rain became steady in the afternoon.
Doug Kalitta took the No. 1 position in Top Fuel, Cruz Pedregon led the Funny Car field, Jeg Coughlin topped the Pro Stock cars, and Hector Arana Jr. was No. 1 in Pro Stock Motorcycle.
Kalitta took his third No. 1 qualifying position of the year with his Friday run of 3.791 seconds at 321.65 mph. In Funny Car, Pedregon raced to his third No. 1 qualifying position on the strength of his 4.086-second pass at 310.41 mph Friday. Coughlin had a pass of 6.569 at 211.20, and Arana had a run of 6.876 at 195.39.
