Michael E. "Mick" Altmire, 60, of Spring Church, went to be with the Lord with his family surrounding him Saturday, June 2, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Unit at Concordia, Cabot.
Mick was born March 7, 1952, in Natrona Heights, a son to Frederick E. and MaryLou (Kunkle) Altmire.
He grew up in Kiski Township and moved to Spring Church, where he had resided for the last 10 years.
Mick played for the Little Pirates, an all-star sandlot team sponsored by the Pittsburgh Pirates, in 1969.
He was a graduate of Apollo-Ridge High School, class of 1970. After graduation he received a baseball scholarship to pitch at Lehigh University, where he attended one year. Mick was quite an accomplished pitcher. He later would graduate from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a degree in business administration.
Mick was employed by Altmire Brothers Coal Company for 12 years and was a control room operator for the last 20 plus years at the Keystone Power Plant in Plumcreek Township.
He attended Boiling Spring Presbyterian Church, Spring Church.
Mick loved all sports, but his real passion was baseball. He was a natural. He was an avid Pirates fan.
His favorite movie was "Braveheart." Mick was a voracious reader, enjoyed crossword puzzles, specifically in The New York Times. He loved nature, animals and his dogs: Maggie, Tucker and Abby.
Mick also enjoyed spending time with his family. They would go to Nags Head, N.C., for family vacations. Above all, he adored his children and was a loving and supportive father.
He was preceded in death by his father, Frederick E. Altmire, on April 9, 2005; a niece, Mackenzie Laura Altmire; and a nephew, Caleb Eli Altmire on Sept. 29, 2010.
Mick is survived by his fiancee, Nancy L. (McCormick) Campitella, of Spring Church; mother, MaryLou (Kunkle) Altmire, of Apollo; twin daughter and son: Annie H. and Ethan M. Altmire, both of North Apollo; stepson, Anthony M. (Ashlie) Campitella, of York; stepdaughter, Stephanie L. Campitella, of East Vandergrift; brother, Robert D. (Kimberly) Altmire, of Kiski Township; brother, Jeffrey J. (Suzann) Altmire, of Sarver; sister, Jacalyn A. (Donald) Holland, of Yorktown, Va.; sister, Lori R. (Diana Muckle) Altmire, of Apollo; uncle, Randy C. Kunkle, of Greensburg; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Curran-Shaffer Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., 100 Owens View Ave., Apollo. Additional viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Boiling Springs Presbyterian Church, Spring Church, where services will begin at 11 a.m. Private interment will be made in Fairview Cemetery, Spring Church.
