James Calvin Poole, 89, of Homer City, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2010, at his residence.
He was the son of Samuel and Flora (Sebring) Poole and was born Oct. 26, 1920, in Numine.
Mr. Poole was a retired coal miner having been employed by R&P Coal Co. for 46 years. He was a member of UMWA Local 488. He also served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Homer City American Legion Post 493 and Indiana VFW Post 1989.
Mr. Poole enjoyed dancing the polka, gardening, walks and spending time with his family and dog, Trinadee. He spent his remaining time at home with his daughter Judy, son-in-law, Steve, and his grandchildren. He enjoyed visits from all of his daughters. His last wish was to be at home with his family. He was a man with the biggest heart.
He is survived by four daughters: Wanda Cummings, Pittsburgh; Judy Fleming and husband Steve, Homer City; Jessica Purcell and husband James, Homer City; and Sandra Kaye Poole, Kittanning; a stepdaughter, Doris Luksich and husband Rick, of Shelocta; a stepson, George Smith, of Johnstown; grandchildren Nicholas Boyer, Jacklynn, Chelsie, Heather, Kelsey, Stephanie, George Jr., Dalton and Shannon; a sister, Bernice Tanner and husband Richard, of Homer City; and brothers Dick Poole, of Ohio, and Wayne Poole, of Homer City.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two wives: Twila Irene Fetterman and Marian Eileen Varner; sisters Hester Tanner, Louise Patz and June Novak; and brothers Russ, Chester, Bruce, Richard Poole and Paul Poole; and an infant son, Robert James.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the C. Frederick Bowser Funeral Home, Homer City, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Joyce Dix Weiers officiating. Interment will follow in the Brush Valley Mission Church Cemetery. The Homer City American Legion Post 493 will conduct graveside services.
