NATALIE OSBORNE: World Spa Day a reminder to pet owners

on February 24, 2013 3:00 PM

World Spay Day is an annual campaign of the Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International that shines a spotlight on spay/neuter. The campaign began in 1995 as Spay Day USA. It has since spread to humane organizations worldwide to raise awareness about pet overpopulation and to encourage spay/neuter. This year it will be held on Tuesday.

Sterilization is a proven way to save the lives of companion animals, feral cats and street dogs that might otherwise be put down in a shelter or killed on the street. Locally, Four Footed Friends and the Indiana County Humane Society join to encourage all pet owners to spay or neuter their pets.

To help low-income pet owners, the Indiana County Spay-Neuter Voucher Program provides vouchers to help pay for the spay/neuter of dogs or cats.

We also sponsor bringing the Animal Friends mobile van to Indiana for low-cost cat spay-neuters.

Due to the cost of coming from Pittsburgh, Animal Friends raised the cost of a spay (or neuter) to a still very inexpensive $50.

Also included in that fee is a rabies shot and treatment for fleas or ear mites if needed.

The van will next visit Indiana on Thursday, April 18.

Even indoor pets can bolt outside when hormones kick in with the instinct to breed. In a few months, both shelters will find themselves filled to the rafters with unwanted puppies and kittens.

The only way to prevent this is to spay or neuter your pet.

For more information about the voucher program or the Animals Friends van, contact Four Footed Friends at (724) 349-1144 or the Indiana County Humane Society at (724) 465-7387.
