PAUL DUNLAP: History shows guns don't kill, people kill

on April 12, 2013 10:40 AM

Guns don’t kill, people kill. If you don’t believe me just study some human history.

Let’s start with the Bible. It is much more than just a source of guidance and inspiration. It is also a terrific history book. King Herod ordered all male babies to be killed. As a result, a lot of babies were slain.

Jesus was crucified and died on a cross. Let us not forget about Cain killing his brother Abel. There are many other examples in the Good Book as well. Those folks back then didn’t have guns; still, it didn’t stop them from killing each other.

If you search outside the Bible, you can also find numerous other human acts of senseless killing. Let’s take a look at Vlad the Impaler, considered the inspiration for the fictional Dracula. Vlad is credited with the killing of thousands of people. His favorite method was to have them impaled on a wooden pole and then put on display.

However, serial killers are not limited to the male gender. There was the Countess Erzs←bet (Elizabeth) B£thory of Hungary, who was accused of slowly and very cruelly torturing her victims to death. Her collaborators eventually were convicted of killing 80 girls. However, based on the number of bodies eventually recovered at the castle, the body count was more than 600.

In more recent resent times we have had Jack the Ripper, the Boston Strangler, the Oklahoma City Federal Building bomber, and let’s not forget about 911. None of these people used guns.

The moral of the story is that guns don’t kill, people kill. From the beginning of mankind people have been killing each other. And they will continue to do so.

If you think that taking away guns is going to stop humans from killing each other, you are living in some dream world and not reality. There are a lot of sick people out there.

As our population keeps growing, so does the number of mentally imbalanced. If only one-forth of 1 per cent of the U.S. population is mentally imbalanced, that is a lot of folks out there on the street who aren’t mentally stable. That is the real problem and not the gun.
