Combat veteran sentenced for crash
EDINBORO (AP) — A U.S. Army combat veteran has been sentenced to serve between 22 and 78 months in state prison over a traffic accident that claimed the life of a local fire chief.
The Erie Times-News reported that Joshua Nickerson, 29, was sentenced Tuesday on charges he drove under the influence of computer cleaner, marijuana and a painkiller and recklessly caused the crash that killed David M. Flint, 49, and seriously injured Flint’s girlfriend in February 2012.
Nickerson served four tours of duty, two each in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Erie County Judge Shad Connelly said the sentence was intended to balance Nickerson’s past with his crime.
Nickerson apologized and asked to be placed in a prison close to his family.
