Crash claims college student

PLUMCREEK TOWNSHIP — An Indiana University of Pennsylvania student was killed in a head-on crash Saturday morning on Route 422 near Elderton.

State police reported Tyler Kulp, of Laureldale, Berks County, died at the scene of the crash.

An eastbound car driven by Stephen Caulfield, of Waterford, Westmoreland County, crossed the centerline of the highway and hit a westbound station wagon driven by Kulp at 9:31 a.m., according to troopers at Kittanning.

Caulfield was not injured, police said.

Kulp was a major in music at IUP, according to the university website.

Route 422 was closed in both directions for more than six hours.

The crash remains under investigation by state police and the Armstrong County coroner’s office.
