CENTER TOWNSHIP — About 800 Penelec customers lost power Tuesday afternoon after a traffic accident on Route 286 West knocked down a utility pole and caused a transformer fire. Tom Stutzman, director of the Indiana County Emergency Management Agency, said the accident occurred around 1:30 p.m. and that power was restored by 8:20 p.m.

Firefighters from Aultman were dispatched at 1:29 p.m. to extinguish the fire, and Homer City firefighters were sent to help with traffic control due to live wires on the road around 1:50 p.m. A hazmat team was also called for fluid leaking from the transformer at 1:51 p.m. Sarah Shaffer of the Aultman Volunteer Fire Department said a tri-axle truck backed into the pole, knocking it down.

No additional information was available at press time.
