Former public defender sentenced
EASTON (AP) — A former eastern Pennsylvania public defender who authorities said embezzled more than $210,000 from former clients has been sentenced to one to two years in prison.
The (Easton) Express-Times said Anthony Martino, 51, of Roseto tearfully apologized Wednesday in Northampton County Court to his family, supporters and the community for his actions.
He said he got into tax trouble and ran up gambling debts and then “took the easy way. The wrong way.”
Prosecutors said he drained the account of an estate he was administering and then stole from other clients to replace the money.
Defense attorney John Waldron asked for a sentence at the county prison for his disbarred client, but the judge said he had no choice but to make an example of Martino.
