Garage destroyed in fire
GREEN TOWNSHIP — A fire destroyed a garage at the home of a volunteer firefighter on Sunday evening.
No one was injured, but the fire gutted the garage and burned up numerous tools and vehicles inside, including an all-terrain vehicle, a car, a tractor and a golf cart.
The fire was reported at 6:39 p.m. at the Taylorsville Road home of Commodore Second Assistant Chief John Weaver. Weaver said he had stepped into the house for a break from some welding work he was doing inside the garage when the fire started.
He said he had been inside his house for no more than five to 10 minutes when he saw smoke rolling out of the garage.
Weaver is the son-in-law of Commodore Chief Ted Hutchenson, who was with him at the time. Hutchenson summoned help over the radio, but by the time fellow firefighters arrived, the building was already engulfed in flames.
In addition to Commodore, firefighters from Marion Center and Clymer responded.
Weaver said the fire is being considered an accident and most likely started in the area where he had been working.
He said the fire damaged his home, having melted some siding on the back of his house.
