Judge deems woman competent

MEADVILLE (AP) — A judge says a northwestern Pennsylvania woman is mentally competent to stand trial in the death of an Ohio woman found buried in a shallow grave.

Ashley Barber’s attorney contends she’s too depressed to participate in her own defense, but a Crawford County judge on Tuesday found her testimony shows she can respond to questions and understand the charges well enough to stand trial.

Barber, 20, and Jade Olmstead, 19, are awaiting trial on charges they lured Brandy Stevens, of Beaver Township, Ohio, to their home near Cochranton in May 2012.
