Lawmakers OK NYPD watchdog

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Police Department is getting a new watchdog and facing easier standards for people filing profiling lawsuits against it.

The City Council on Thursday overrode Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s vetoes to enact the measures. The vote came less than two weeks after a federal judge imposed new oversight of her own.

Supporters call the new laws a victory for civil rights. Bloomberg says the legislation will make it harder for police officers to protect people.
