Lumber company open for business following blaze

A fire caused a six-figure loss Saturday night at a lumber company in White Township, but the business is operating almost normally today, officials said.

“We have power, we have phone; our office and main building had minimal damage,” said Walter Schroth, owner of the Schroth Lumber Co. along Martin Road.

The fire destroyed a storage building, one of four main structures on the company site. No one was reported to be injured.

“We’ve had two loads of lumber in already, so we’re up and running,” Schroth said just before 8 a.m.

Firefighters from Indiana and surrounding areas worked more than five hours to douse the flames, and Assistant Fire Chief Mike Empfield estimated the damage at $350,000, Schroth said.
