on July 03, 2013 10:20 AM

DANVILLE (AP) — The state health department wants a thorough review after a patient’s gun fired as he was being treated in the emergency room at a central Pennsylvania hospital.

The bullet entered the top of a wall and no one was hit.

A spokesman for Geisinger Medical Center in Danville said it happened around 8 p.m. Thursday as the man was being turned by ER staff inside a trauma bay.

The (Bloomsburg) Press Enterprise reported the spokesman, Mike Ferlazzo, said a handgun fell out of the patient’s pocket and fired.

Police say the patient had a permit for that gun and that they don’t consider it a criminal matter.
