One person was killed and three others were injured Wednesday morning in a traffic accident involving a shuttle bus transporting elderly women to an adult day-care facility.
According to authorities, Sandra Livingston, 70, of Homer City, died after being thrown from the shuttle when it collided with a car at Ben Franklin Road and Shelly Drive in White Township.
Livingston and two other women were on their way to the SeniorCARE facility in White Township when the accident occurred.
Police said the shuttle driver, Michael Smith, 20, of Nanty Glo, failed to stop at a red light and collided with a vehicle driven by Frank Fazio Jr., 77.
Livingston was flown to Allegheny General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 12:14 p.m. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office listed the cause of death as blunt force trauma to her head and torso.
Another passenger, Kathryn Reeger, 79, was flown to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown. The third passenger, Grace Renwick, 76, was taken to Indiana Regional Medical Center.
Fazio also was injured and was taken to IRMC for treatment.
Conditions of those who were injured were unavailable this morning.
Police said Smith was not injured.
Mark Fox, a spokesman for SeniorLIFE, which operates the shuttle, said the company makes more than 100,000 trips to and from its facilities throughout southwestern Pennsylvania every year and has never had an accident such as this occur.
“An accident like this is jarring to us,” said Fox.
The facility specializes in working with elderly people who have medical problems. Fox said the company has been in touch with the families of the accident victims and is cooperating with state police.
Fox said Smith is a new driver for the company and has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation into the accident.
The intersection was closed for roughly three hours as Indiana firefighters cleaned up the scene and police worked to reconstruct the accident.
