APOLLO-RIDGE: Turkey Trot raises money for cancer research

SPRING CHURCH -- We have many important students here at Apollo-Ridge Elementary School. Jacob Duriancik, a fourth-grade student, is doing something truly amazing.

Duriancik has created his own team to support CureSearch, a charity that helps fund childhood cancer research.

Duriancik recently fought a difficult battle with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. He now wants to help other children who are fighting cancer.

In order to help Duriancik fund and support his charity, Apollo-Ridge Elementary held a special event called the Turkey Trot, which was held on Nov. 14-15.

The Turkey Trot is when students in all grades collect pledges for every lap they walk around our school.

All of the money collected will be given to Duriancik.

He will then give the money to his charity during the CureSearch Walk in August.

There were also competitions between every grade in the school.

The class that collects the most money in each grade level will win a healthy snack party.

The top raiser in each grade will win an official "Team Jake D" T-shirt. The grand prize was the Turkey Trot trophy, which was given to the top-earning classroom in the entire school.

The winner of the Turkey Trot trophy was Cindy Hines's fourth-grade classroom.

Each staff member in our school had a chance to purchase a "Team Jake D" shirt. The shirt is green and has a snake on the front.

They were asked to wear their shirts to school to show support for Duriancik.

A picture was then taken at the end of the day.

Soon, more and more "Team Jake D" shirts will be seen throughout Apollo-Ridge Elementary School.

We are all doing our best to support Duriancik and his charity.

So far, students at Apollo-Ridge Elementary School have raised almost $5,000 with the Turkey Trot for Team Jake D and CureSearch.

More information can be found at www.curesearch.org.

We are proud to say Duriancik is now cancer-free and continuing to help other children fighting cancer.
