HOMER-CENTER: Trout in the Classroom project starts
December 07, 2012 11:00 AM

HOMER CITY -- Students at Homer-Center High School will be anxiously watching trout hatchlings grow as they participate in a conservation-oriented environmental education program, Trout in the Classroom (TIC).

The trout eggs arrived last month, hatched and are currently in the developmental stage known as "sac fry." Students will raise the trout until they are able to be released into lakes and cold water streams.

This motion of raising and observing the young trout growth promotes a clear understanding of water resources and encourages a conservation ethic toward the participating students. The trout can be observed for progress at any time thanks to our H-C Trout Cam, which is activated during the day. Mark Shopland, science teacher and adviser of the TIC project, shared his thoughts about the educational program.

"The local Trout Unlimited chapter helped fund the tank and provide the fish eggs," he said. "This program is nationwide and its purpose is to really show all students the value of clean water for fish. We will be done with the trout around May. At that point they will be about 3 inches long, and we will release them into Ferrier's Run."

Homer-Center High School also showed its Christmas spirit this past Wednesday as the junior and senior high choruses and band performed their selections of Christmas songs.

This coming week, the younger voices of Homer's elementary will perform their Christmas concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.

As we enter the core of winter, Homer's basketball teams are having their annual tip-off tournament to mark the beginning of the season. Come support both the girls' and boys' basketball teams as they face other teams around the area. The games start tonight and lead into tomorrow to determine the tournament champions.

This concludes the news for Homer-Center this week. Tune in next week for more news events on Homer as more Christmas activities take place throughout the school district.
