Security cameras planned for Blairsville Elementary

BURRELL TOWNSHIP — The Blairsville-Saltsburg school district will install security cameras at Blairsville Elementary School to bring that building in line with the security of other buildings.

The board voted to install 47 cameras — 32 inside and 15 outside — at a cost of $52,000.

Also regarding security, the board set a special meeting at 7:30 p.m. March 6 to possibly vote on security options.

The board is reviewing options, which are to have state police or officials from the sheriff’s office patrol the school, to hire retired state police officers, or keep things status quo.

Before the special voting meeting, a budget meeting will be held at 6 p.m., and a meeting on policies will be at 6:30.

In other business, the board:

n Will hold the school district’s combined track program at Saltsburg for the 2012-13 year, and will hold the combined softball program at Blairsville. The board also voted to allow athletic directors, coaches and building principals to determine playoff participation.

Also, the soccer program will continue as a club sport, but will consist of boys’ and girls’ varsity teams.

n Accepted a LifeSkills Training Program Grant from the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence. The grant will “provide training and technical assistance, as well as curriculum materials,” according to the acceptance letter. The training program will begin in the fall for three years at Blairsville Middle School and Saltsburg Middle High School. This program is for drug and alcohol prevention, said Ian Magness,

n Approved the following field trips at no cost to the district: BHS sophomore students to Kiwanis workshop, April 5; BES kindergarten to the Children’s Museum in Pittsburgh, April 19; BHS Art II & III students to the Andy Warhol Museum, April 19; BHS student council day at PNC Park, May 8; SES third grade to Carnegie Science Center, May 10; SES fifth grade to the Blackleggs Creek & Education Area, May 16; SES first grade to Carnegie Museum of Natural History, May 22; SES second grade to the Pittsburgh Zoo, May 24; and BHS Physics & AP Physics students to Kennywood Education Day, May 28.

n Approved Karen Kerin as BHS musical music director.

n Terminated the supplemental contract of an employee identified only as No. 1360, effective Feb. 8.

n Accepted the resignation of Melissa Milanak as BSSD girls’ track head coach.

n Approved the following volunteer coaches: Mat-thew Nicely, BHS baseball; Jonathan Santoro, BHS baseball; and Chad Yowler, BHS baseball. n Will advertise for all contracted supplemental positions for the 2013-14 year.

n Approved Patrick Camut as a long-term substitute during the remainder of a leave of absence of Cheri Matarrese at a prorated salary of $20,000 with no other benefits.

n Approved leaves of absence for the following: Denise Fazi, BES guidance counselor, intermittently retroactive to Friday through the end of the 2012-13 year; Wanda Cunningham, SMHS attendance/copy aide, intermittently as needed through the end of the school year; and Cheryl Bevard, BHS teacher at BHS, intermittently retroactive from Jan. 10 through the end of the school year.

In addition, the board approved a day of uncompensated leave for Courtney Scherf, BMHS art teacher, for May 3; and eight days of uncompensated leave for Samuel Zack, BES custodian, from Aug. 8 to 17.

The board also approved a sabbatical leave for restoration of health for Yolande McCloskey, BES librarian, from Jan. 31 to the end of the school year.

n Approved these professional substitutes: Alexandra Crouse, art; and Hannah Senft, music.

n Approved these nonprofessional substitutes: Carrie Koczan, custodian and cafeteria aide; Naolanani Hamilton, secretary, noon-hour, aide and cafeteria; and Ryan Gabelli, maintenance and custodian.

n Approved these drivers and substitute drivers as employees of Smith Bus Co.: Rodney Turk, McIntyre; and Kimberly Roman, Clarksburg.

n Expelled a student identified only as No. 077223.
