LAURA YEVCHAK: 'No act of kindness .. is ever wasted'

One of my colleagues who teaches across the hall from me has a beautiful message painted above her door: “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” The quote is Aesop; it is nothing new.

There have been several times that she has taught units about the power of that quote, and what it means to the humanity we find beyond the school. I was reminded of this quote as I sat in my home on Philadelphia Street one recent evening.

It was a Sunday evening, and unlike the prediction that Phil made, the evening provided no springlike weather.

And just as I began my dietary descent into a carton of chocolate ice cream, my husband pointed out that there were cars stopped outside and it appeared that a dog had been hit by a car. The dog was walking and the people were huddled on the sidewalk with it.

We threw on our boots and we headed out to see if there was anything we could do.

In a series of brainstorms and cellphone calls, the four strangers were able to locate the owner of the fifth furry stranger.

The owners arrived shortly after, grateful.

It is hard for me to take thanks because I was initially oblivious that this dog had been wandering around my home for an hour (as documented by the paw prints in the snow).

When I did come to aid in the issue, I hadn’t done much.

There was also a third reason it was hard to accept the thanks: You would hope that someone would do the same for you.

Call it altruism, call it paying it forward, call it small-town community — when it comes down to it, it exists here, in Indiana.

The small acts of kindness we give, receive and witness each day are the most essential parts of the human experience.

So, when it feels as if the world is full of dark cynicism, know that it starts with you, it starts here, and no act of kindness is ever wasted.
