Music students selected for honors ensembles

Two Indiana Area Senior High School students recently represented Pennsylvania in the All-Eastern Treble Choir sponsored by the Eastern Division of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME).

Senior Savanna Smith and junior Keely McCune were chosen to perform with the All-Eastern Treble Choir, having qualified for application through their standings at last year’s Pennsylvania All-State Chorus.

In Pennsylvania, that also means students must first compete at district- and region-level events sponsored by the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA).

Then through an application process, students are selected from 11 states — Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont — in addition to the District of Columbia and Europe. The event was held in Hartford, Conn., at the beginning of April, with rehearsals and performances under the direction of Dr. Janet Galv£n from Ithaca College.

While many schools will never have even one student selected to one of these prestigious ensembles, the following Indiana students have performed with MENC (National Association for Music Education) All-Eastern Honors Ensembles in the past:

1999 — New York City (Geoffrey Bieger, Nathan Irwin, Michael Kokolis — chorus)

2001 — Pittsburgh (Jasmine Jenkins — chorus, Will Cicola — wind ensemble)

2003 — Providence, R.I. (Alice Drozdiak — chorus, Joseph Saylor — jazz ensemble)

2005 — Baltimore (Kayte Gongaware — chorus)

2007 — Hartford, Conn. (Kathryn Wagner — chorus)

2009 — Providence, R.I. (Matthew Neal, Chelsea Young — chorus)

2011 — Baltimore (Natalie Young — wind ensemble, David Cupp — chorus)

The event happens only once every two years and runs concurrently with the MENC All-Eastern Division In-Service Conference.

Additionally, four Indiana students qualified to participate in the 2013 Pennsylvania All-State Chorus this year.

Ten students from Indiana participated in the District 3 Chorus, with eight qualifying to advance on to the Region II Chorus. At each level, there is a competitive audition process that determines who moves on to the next level.

At the Region II Chorus, students audition once more to secure a spot in the Pennsylvania All-State Chorus. Smith, Devon Robinson, Zach Beeken and Nick Kloszewski all qualified for participation in the 2013 All-State Chorus. Kloszewski had already been selected for the All-State Orchestra, however.

These students traveled to Erie and rehearsed together with students from across the commonwealth, culminating in a public performance at the beautiful Warner Theatre under the direction of conductor/composer Dr. Steven Sametz from Lehigh University.
