May 01, 2013 11:00 AM

The Indiana County Fair and Dan and Lynette Yarnick, of Yarnick’s Farm Market, are again sponsoring a Giant Pumpkin Contest as part of the vegetable contest and display at the 2013 fair.

Yarnick’s will provide the seed to be used by those entering the contest. In addition, the market will provide an information sheet with guidelines for planting and growing large pumpkins. Pumpkins for this contest must possess the genetic characteristics of this plant variety and be from Yarnick’s. There will be two classes, open and a 4-H/Future Farmers of America class.

Yarnick’s is also providing premiums for each class: first place, $50; second place, $35; and third place, $15. The rules, entry date and premium will also be in the fair’s 2013 premium book. Weigh-in will be Friday, Aug. 23, between noon at 7 p.m.

To enter, pick up the following between now and May 31 at Yarnick’s Farm Market, 155 Thomas Covered Bridge Road, White Township: a packet of pumpkin seeds, an information sheet, and the county fair entry form. Call Herbert Pollock at (724) 349-9544 or Yarnick’s Farm Market at (724) 349-3904 for more information.
