Women's escape offers hope for others missing

Never underestimate the resilience of the human spirit. Never underestimate its thirst for freedom.

And never, ever give up when searching for a missing person. You never know when or where a mystery may be solved.

Those are lessons learned from the dramatic escape and rescue of three women in Cleveland on Monday.

Separately, they had been missing for nearly a decade since they were in their teens or early 20s.

One of the women used a fleeting moment when her kidnapper was not watching. The public recording of her 911 phone call is as tragic as it is miraculous and inspiring. After all those years, she chose not to surrender in spirit.

Three brothers have been arrested in a residential area not far from where the women disappeared, and investigations continue.

The dramatic outcome ought to inspire law enforcement authorities, as well as everyday citizens, to redouble efforts and alerts on cold cases.

If Cleveland can have a surprise ending, so can any area that has unsolved mysteries with missing persons.
