Wayne Murdick said he was looking for a job when he heard the current tax collector was retiring. And he thought his experience with billing and payroll qualifies him for the job.

“I needed a job,” he said. “I have experience to do the job and do it well and I am retired, so I have the time.”

Murdick retired from the local tire manufacturing industry. He started at the former McCreary Tire and Rubber Co/Specialty Tires of America and was superintendent of Specialty Tires for 42 years, he said.

During his career he worked in the data processing department, processing checks for suppliers and employees.

As a five-term secretary for the Indiana Franklin Masonic Lodge he received all the monies for the lodge and kept “true and exact records between the lodge and its (500) members,” he said.

He also was president of the lodge for two terms.

An Indiana County native, he graduated from Indiana Area High School in 1953 and has about three years’ worth of credits to a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

He also served as chairman for fundraising events for the Special Olympics.

Murdick said he would make the position his full-time job.

“I’m a nice guy. I get along well with people and I enjoy meeting people, I enjoy the company and the experience of meeting with different people,” he said.

He and his late wife of 50 years, Elaine Marshall, had two daughters: Debbie Smith and Sharon Keener; and three grandchildren.
