Early plans for the rebuilding of the Vinegar Hill steps included a decorative arch between two columns over the bottom of the stairway. But that feature was dropped from the current construction plans as a cost-saving measure.
Leaders of Downtown Indiana Inc. hope to get the arch reinstated in the blueprints. To raise cash possibly for the arch — and for future segments of the downtown revitalization project — the downtown business group is selling bronze plaques that can be personalized with memorials or short messages.
The plaques will be mounted on the risers of the 69 new steps.
Jess Bowman, main street manager for Downtown Indiana Inc., said each plaque will be individually sand cast in solid bronze and will measure 4 inches tall by 8 inches wide. Names of the donors or other appropriate brief inscriptions can be placed on the plaques. The inscription can have up to four lines of text with up to 20 characters per line.
The plaques are priced at $500 each and a sample is on display at the Downtown Indiana Inc. office in Old Borough Hall along North Seventh Street. More information on ordering a plaque is also available by calling Downtown Indiana Inc. at (724) 463-6110.
