While the Indiana Country Club Invitational was going on over the hill, Meadow Lane Golf Course held its own better-ball tournament last weekend.
Rick Moorhead and Rich Riddle scored a 56 for a four-stroke victory in Meadow Lane’s Best Ball Championship event, played last Saturday and Sunday.
The duo took first ahead of the second-place score for Moorhead with Bernadette Sgro-Hodak, a 60. The team of Moorhead and Sgro-Hodak took second in a match of cards with the grouping of Jeremy Flynn and Sgro-Hodak.
Troy Redinger and Travis Redinger came in fourth place at 61.
• Scott Cunningham beat Dale Tozer, 5 and 3, and Jeremy Flynn defeated Dean Tozer, 5 and 4, in quarterfinal-round Palmer Bracket matches in the Coney Island Meadow Lane Match-Play Tournament since the last report.
In the Hogan Bracket, Travis Redinger defeated Brad Malenich, 4 and 3, and Dave Dixson topped Smoke Weston, 1 up.
Kurt Manecke edged Marty Medvetz, 1 up, and Shawn Askins got past Brandon Dixson, 5 and 4, in the Snead Bracket.
Bracket semifinal matches are scheduled to be completed by next Sunday.
• Meadow Lane has two tournaments in the next week. Its second Flag Event of the season is Thursday. The Hi/Lo Scramble Weekend event is next weekend.
FUHRER INVITATIONAL: Former IUP standout Ryan Sikora finished in fourth place after holding a two-stroke lead entering the final round of the Frank B. Fuhrer Jr. Invitational last week at the Pittsburgh Field Club.
Sikora, a club pro at Hannastown Golf Club, was the top-finishing club pro, behind three tournament professionals. He shot a 282 over four rounds (67-70-69-76), three strokes behind champion Mike Van Sickle.
Sean Knapp, an IUP graduate from Oakmont, tied for 21st place out of 40 players, shooting a 296.
Jon Mills, an Indiana resident and a touring pro out of the Indiana Country Club, shot a 304 to finish in a four-way tie for 31st place, and Indiana Country Club pro Daniel Braun finished four strokes back, at 309, good for 37th place.
ON THE JUNIOR CIRCUIT: C.J. Hughes, of Indiana, shot a 76 and took first place in the boys’ 14-year-old division in the Kings Restaurants Junior Golf Tournament at the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort Links Course on Wednesday.
Kyle Grube, of Indiana, took third place in the boys’ 15- to 16-year-old division with a 74. Alexa Strong, also of Indiana, tied for fifth place in the girls’ 16- to 18-year-old division with an 89.
• Mason Frumkin, of Shelocta, topped the boys’ age 13-15 Pine Valley division in the North East Junior Golf Tour’s event at Lenape Heights Golf Course in Ford City on Tuesday. He shot a 98, three strokes ahead of second-place finisher Frank Bevevino, of Indiana.
Homer City’s A.J. Bono took third place in the boys’ 16-18 Oakmont division with an 87, and Clymer’s Roman Tate came in fifth in the boys’ 16-18 Pine Valley Division with a 92.
AT INDIAN SPRINGS: Jennie Morandi and Cherise Cunningham won the play of the day in the Indian Springs Tuesday Morning Ladies league.
Cunningham shot closest to the pin on No. 17. Carrie Harshyne, Karen Brown and Shirley Niehenke tied for the low putts, with 16 each.
Pat Marshall and Barb Norland added chip-ins.
