Area students participate in 4-H camp

Nineteen Indiana County 4-H members were recent participants in the Southwest Regional 4-H Camp held at the Laurelville Retreat Center near Mount Pleasant.

There were 56 campers and 21 teen counselors from seven counties who attended the camp, called “Can You Dig It? PA Agriculture”

AgChoice Farm Credit made a financial donation to the camp program.

The Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association and Pennsylvania Dairy Promotion Program, with the support of local 4-H leader Bertha Ackerson, provided dairy products and a dairy workshop for the camp. Campers learned about topics including animal science, agronomy, dairy production, poultry and the state’s ranking in various agricultural commodities.

Indiana County campers were William Barnhart, Lucky Kids; Cloe Bowser, Sleepy Hollow; Megan Blose and Rachel McDivitt, Northern Livestock; Dragon Powell, Marion Center Handy Helpers; Jacob Short, Blairsville Day Camp; and Mya Mano and Nathan DeHaven, individual members.

Indiana County counselors were Kelsey Henry, Trailblazers; Jesse Isenberg, Teresa Shields, Alexis McConnell and William McConnell, Gordon; Nichele Olson, Abby Zyhowski, Garrett Richardson and Marshall Richardson, Marion Center Handy Helpers; Mary Ann Ostach, Faithful Furry Faces; and Renee Short, Blairsville Day Camp.

Jesse Isenberg, Garrett Richardson, William McConnell and Abby Zyhowski were winners of Counselor Peer Leadership Awards. Garrett Richardson and Nichele Olson were recognized for their final year as camp counselors.

Indiana County participants assisting with the program were Extension Summer Assistants Kelsey Isenberg and Katie Mehalik, who coordinated educational activities and assisted with special programs, and Extension Educator Carol Schurman, camp director.
