MLB: Kemp calls to strip Braun of 2011 MVP
July 24, 2013 10:30 AM

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp, who finished runner-up to Ryan Braun in voting for the 2011 National League Most Valuable Player award, thinks the suspended Milwaukee Brewers slugger should be stripped of the honor.

Braun agreed Monday to a 65-game suspension for unspecified violations of baseball’s drug rules and labor contract.

Braun finished with 388 points and 20 first-place votes, to 332 and 10 for Kemp. Major League Baseball attempted to suspend Braun following a positive test in October of that year for elevated testosterone, but the penalty was overturned by an arbitrator who ruled Braun’s urine sample was handled improperly.

Meanwhile in Milwaukee, a chain of convenience stores is cutting ties with Braun in the wake of his season-ending suspension. Gary Gonczy, director of marketing and advertising for Kwik Trip, Inc., says the company will no longer use Braun as a spokesman.

RED SOX, PEDROIA CLOSE TO DEAL: All-Star second baseman Dustin Pedroia is close to a contract that could keep him with the Boston Red Sox for his entire big league career.

A person with knowledge of the talks said that Pedroia is in the process of agreeing to a deal adding $100 million over seven seasons through 2021.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the agreement was not yet complete.

The 5-foot-8, 165-pound sparkplug was the AL Rookie of the Year in 2007 and AL MVP in 2008.

“It's not official or anything, but, yeah, this is my home,” he said before Tuesday night's game against Tampa Bay. “I love being here. ... So if (the deal is finalized), I'll be pretty excited.”

ORIOLES ACQUIRE RELIEVER K-ROD: The Baltimore Orioles bolstered their bullpen with a late-inning arm, acquiring reliever Francisco Rodriguez from the last-place Milwaukee Brewers for minor league infielder Nick Delmonico.

M’s MANAGER MISSES ANOTHER GAME: Eric Wedge spent a second night in a Seattle area hospital as doctors try to determine the cause of dizziness that sent the Mariners manager to the hospital on Monday.
