IUP president, Indiana mayor to host open forum
August 01, 2013 10:55 AM

Dr. Michael Driscoll, Indiana University of Pennsylvania president, and George Hood, Indiana mayor, will hold a community open forum on Aug. 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Jimmy Stewart Museum, 835 Philadelphia St.

The forum is intended as an opportunity for community members to hear an update about IUP and to ask questions and share concerns with Driscoll and Hood. William Sutton, Indiana Borough chief of police and interim Indiana Borough manager, will moderate the discussion.

The open forum is open to all community members. There is no charge for admission.

“President Driscoll and I continue to meet, and these meetings have provided good information and ideas, and we want citizens to be involved in our discussions and plans to bring the university and community closer,” Hood said in a news release.

“Personally, I have always shared a great relationship with IUP presidents, professors, staff and especially the students. I am delighted that this community open forum is taking place, and my hope is that these open forums will continue on a regular basis.”

Hood, a lifelong resident of Indiana, was born in the 400 block of Church Street. He attended local public schools and Indiana State Teachers College (now IUP). He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict and retired in 1991 from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation after 40 years of service. He was elected mayor of Indiana Borough in 1997 and has been re-elected for four terms. Hood was recently appointed to the board of directors of the Pennsylvania Municipal League, of which Indiana is a member.

Driscoll said one of his key goals for 2013 is to strengthen IUP’s collaboration with Indiana Borough and the rest of the county.

“I’ve learned a great deal through ongoing meetings with Indiana Borough, White Township and Indiana County leadership, as well as the citizens of my new hometown, and I look forward to hearing from members of the community through this open forum,” he said in the release.

“IUP takes its responsibility of being a good citizen of the community very seriously. I’m pleased to join with Mayor Hood for this community open forum, and I look forward to hearing ideas and suggestions. IUP’s future success is linked to the community’s success. We are all in this together and Mayor Hood and I are committed to keeping an open line of communication between the university and community, and this open forum is a great vehicle to help us to meet this goal.”

Driscoll began his IUP presidency exactly one year ago from today. A native of Michigan, he has a bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering from Michigan State University and has leadership experience at both the campus and system levels.
