NCAA FOOTBALL: Penn State to play Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — Virginia Tech and Penn State have agreed to play a home-and-home series in football beginning in 2022.

Barring a bowl matchup in the interim, the teams will meet for the first time at Lane Stadium on Sept. 17, 2022, and again in State College on Sept. 16 the following season.

The series figures to have special significance to Hokies AD Jim Weaver. He earned bachelor’s (1967) and master’s degrees (1968) from Penn State, played center and linebacker there and was an assistant coach there from 1969-72.

Timberwolves re-sign Pekovic

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Timberwolves agreed to terms with restricted free agent center Nikola Pekovic on a five-year contract worth $60 million that includes an additional $8 million in incentives.

Pekovic, 27, posted a career-high 16.3 points and 8.8 rebounds per game last season.

Sixers owner to buy Devils

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A person familiar with the negotiations said Phila-delphia 76ers owner Josh Harris will add the NHL’s New Jersey Devils and the lease to their arena to his portfolio today.

Attorneys for both sides were putting the final touches on the deal Wednesday that would allow Jeff Vanderbeek to sell his majority ownership to Harris.

MLB brass to look at replay

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) — Major League Baseball Executive Vice President Joe Torre gave his instant replay proposal to the executive committee to consider as baseball’s brass huddled for two days of meetings.

MLB is looking at a vast expansion of video review for the 2014 season and is examining whether all calls other than balls and strikes should be subject to instant replay.

Rio head resigns post

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — The head of the public body coordinating planning for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro has resigned, raising concerns about the city’s ability to stage the first games in South America.

The resignation of Marcio Fortes, who headed the Olympic Public Authority, was confirmed by the organization. Fortes had complained that the office has lost its influence.

The resignation might concern inspectors from the International Oly-mpic Committee, who will be in Rio at the end of the month to assess progress on preparations for the games. The IOC has expressed concerns that planning and construction are moving slowly.

Wimbledon champ retires

MASON, Ohio (AP) —Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli, 28, of France, decided to retire Wednesday night, saying she could no longer deal with the continuous pain on the court.

Her tearful announcement at the Western & Southern Open came less than two months after she pushed through the pain to win her greatest championship on Wimbledon’s chewed-up grass, defeating Sabine Lisicki.

After another painful time on court during a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 loss to Simona Halep on Wednesday, she called her father and came to her decision.
