A clean sweep

Spring cleaning isn’t just a good idea for houses.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is looking for volunteers to help with this year’s Great American Cleanup of Pennsylvania that runs through May 31. The clean-up is an annual event sponsored by PennDOT, Keep America Beautiful and the state Department of Environmental Protection.

Last year, more than 141,000 volunteers picked up 6.7 million pounds of litter along Pennsylvania’s roads, trails and shorelines.

Playing an important part in the clean-up are the volunteers of PennDOT’s Adopt-A-Highway program. AAH volunteers collect litter on 2-mile sections of state road four times a year. In Indiana County, 132 AAH groups with more than 2,700 volunteers keep nearly 300 miles of roads tidy.

Anyone wanting to help with the spring clean-up can find a listing of cleanup events at www.gacofpa.org.

Anyone interested in starting or joining an AAH group should contact the AAH coordinator at PennDOT’s District 10 office at (724) 357-2817.

New this spring is Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup Video Contest. Participants are invited to create a 3-to-5-minute video of their clean-up project. Contest rules are available at the above website.
