MONROEVILLE (AP) — A western Pennsylvania man was jailed on vehicular homicide and other hit-and-run-related charges after police said he tried to get his family to take the blame for crashing into a motorcyclist who died.

Online court records don’t list an attorney for Fremont Mathias, 32, who remained jailed Tuesday in connection with Sunday’s crash that killed Lawrence Matvey, 69, a Marine Corps veteran.

Allegheny County police said Mathias crossed the center line of a road about 9 a.m. and smashed his pickup head-on into Matvey’s motorcycle.

Lt. Andrew Schurman said the pickup was disabled and abandoned by Freemont who allegedly fled then tried to get his wife and other relatives to cover up his involvement and have one of them take the blame for the crash.
