Just four days before its first football game, United was forced to scramble Tuesday morning to find a game for its season opener after Rockwood canceled its season.
United quickly filled the open date by adding the WPIAL’s Bishop Canevin, which was also looking for a Week 1 opponent. The Lions and the Crusaders will square off Saturday at 1 p.m. at United’s Thomas J. Madill Field.
“Rockwood had to cancel their whole season, which left us hanging, but luckily, Bishop Canevin ran into the same thing and we picked them up,” United athletic director Cullen Stokes said. “We’re playing Saturday instead to give the teams an extra day to prepare.”
Bishop Canevin needed to find someone for its first game after Imani Christian expectedly forfeited its season on Aug. 19. Imani Christian never held a practice this year due to a lack of players. Rockwood made the decision to call off its season after a player suffered a season-ending injury in Friday’s scrimmage, leaving the Rockets with only 11 players.
