WILKINSBURG — Apollo-Ridge raced to a 34-0 lead in the second quarter and never took its foot off the gas in a 56-36 thrashing of Wilkinsburg in a WPIAL Eastern Conference football game on a sunny Saturday afternoon.
Wilkinsburg finished with three more rushing yards than the Vikings, 269-266, but couldn’t keep up with Apollo-Ridge’s passing attack.
Jesse Zelonka completed 11 of 16 pass attempts for 141 yards and two touchdowns. He hit Tre Tipton with a 12-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and Alex Smith with a 19-yarder in the second.
Tipton caught seven passes for 68 yards and added two interceptions on defense. Smith finished with two receptions for 45 yards.
Duane Brown put the Vikings on the board first with a 6-yard run. Tipton scored his touchdown, Zelonka added a 5-yard rushing touchdown and Smith’s score put Apollo-Ridge ahead 27-0.
Brown just about put the game out of reach when he picked off Ryan Cox and ran it back 50 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter.
Wilkinsburg didn’t help its own cause, committing 12 penalties for 101 yards and coughing up the ball four times.
The Vikings outgained the Tigers, 411-366 in total yards, but the game wasn’t as close as the stats showed.
After halftime, Jonah Casella increased Apollo-Ridge’s lead to 41-8 with a 1-yard rushing touchdown in the third.
Casella scored again in the fourth on a 6-yard run, and Gareth Dilick had a 61-yard touchdown run to round out the Vikings’ scoring.
