Bocce tournament set for Special Olympics
September 12, 2013 10:45 AM

Special Olympics Pennsylvania Armstrong Indiana County will be holding their annual bocce tournament on Saturday at the White Township Recreation Complex.

Registration begins at 2 p.m. and opening ceremonies begin at 3 p.m. The number of bocce athletes has doubled since last year’s tournament. Athletes from Armstrong and Indiana counties have spent more than eight weeks practicing at various locations under the direction of coaches Anne Simmons (Indiana County) and Holly Shoaf (Armstrong County).

SOPA A/I will also be celebrating Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day at the bocce tournament. Eunice Kennedy Shriver was an inspiration in bringing together people with and without intellectual disabilities to participate in unified sports. She strived for people to forget about differences and recognize our mutual humanity. SOPA A/I requests everyone to take a moment to honor Shriver and consider getting involved with the movement Play Unified to Live Unified. To get involved, consider joining a unified sports team, start one of your own, volunteer as a coach in your area or simply become a fan of Special Olympics on Facebook.
