CHARLESTON, W.Va. — IUP’s Abby McCormick and Erika Schnaas advanced to the semifinals before bowing out of the ITA Atlantic Regional tennis tournament Monday.
McCormick and Schnaas won three doubles matches and nearly pulled off an upset of California’s Alex Borgenhoff and Ramona Czakon in the semifinals. They started off with an 8-0 win over Charleston’s Molly Ballard and Taylor Youell in the round of 64 before defeating West Virginia State’s Jordan Kerns and Charlotte Sandy, 8-4.
In the quarterfinals, they trailed 7-4 to West Liberty’s Lauren Howard and Raissa Wischi before reeling off five straight points for a 9-7 win. The reverse happened in the semifinals when they took a 6-3 lead over Borgenhoff and Czakon before falling 8-6.
IUP’s Sophie Butland reached the quarterfinals in singles play. She won three matches, the highlight coming in the round of 32 when she beat fifth-seeded Lucie Rey, of California, 6-7, 6-2, 1-0. She went on to defeat Bluefield State’s Marijana Gjorgjevska, 7-6, 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals and eventually lost Borgenhoff, 6-0, 6-0.
Butland opened up the tournament with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Charleston’s Mallika Mali.
IUP plays once more this fall, facing Shippensburg and Bloomsburg on Oct. 5, in Shippensburg.
