H.S. GOLF: Indiana clinches playoff berth
The Indiana High School boys’ golf team clinched a WPIAL team playoff berth by defeating Greensburg Salem, 187-227, in a Division 1 Section 1 match Monday afternoon at the Indiana Country Club.
The Indians had made the team playoffs the previous two years before missing them by one loss — a one-stroke loss to Hempfield — last year.
“It’s a tremendous accomplishment for the entire team,” Indiana coach Dave Myers said. “It was one of our main goals before the season, and it’s nice to know we got that even before the season is out.”
Matt Holuta led Indiana (10-1, 9-1 section) by shooting a 34 and taking the medalist honor. He was followed by Kevin Jack and Wade Semsick (37), Kyle Grube (38), John Louis Gatti (41) and Sam Stever (44).
With one loss each, Indiana and Latrobe are tied for the section lead. The top two in each section go to the team playoffs. This is the third year out of four that the Indiana seniors have gone to team playoffs. Holuta has started for the team each of those years.
“I know it’s special for him and all the rest of the seniors,” Myers said.
Holuta, Gatti and Grube will play in the WPIAL individual semifinals today at Hannastown Golf Club in Greensburg. The Indians return to team play Wednesday at the Kiski School for a non-league match at Totteridge Golf Course.
